Company Profile

Dioptra has been providing surveying, mapping, and G.I.S. services since 2000. Prior to the creation of Dioptra, Rodney Burch was the original founder of a full service surveying & engineering company in Southeast Idaho. After selling the former company and serving as the Program Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Technology Program at ISU, Rodney returned to the consulting profession doing business as Dioptra Geomatics.

In 2007, Dioptra Geomatics merged with Centennial Enterprises to create Dioptra LLC. In 2015, Stewart Ward purchased Dioptra from Rodney Burch.

Stewart has been with Dioptra since 2006 and is excited to continue the professional service that Dioptra’s clients expect. Stewart, along with the great staff at Dioptra, strive to provide “Solution Oriented Surveying” on every project regardless of the size and complexity. Together, Dioptra LLC has more than 20 years combined experience in the surveying profession.

Meet Our Team

Owner, Chubbuck Office Manager

Stewart K. Ward, PLS

Stewart is a PLS in Idaho, Utah, and Alaska and has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics from Idaho State University. He has been involved with surveying since 2001 and is experienced in land surveys, ground based LiDAR, construction staking, mapping, and GIS applications.

Stewart manages all projects. His combination of experience and training qualifies him to perform all required survey duties on a variety of projects.

Project Manager

Adam Thayer, PLS

Adam is a project manager and Professional Land Surveyor licensed in Idaho and has over seven years of surveying experience. His experience includes construction staking, land planning, 3D scanning, aerial mapping, and boundary and topographic surveys. Adam graduated from Idaho State University with a Bachelor of Science in Geomatics Technology. He is an FAA Part 107 Certified remote pilot. Adam has authored numerous articles for xyHt, a magazine for geospatial professionals. He is an active member of the Idaho Society of Professional Land Surveyors and serves as the NSPS Young Surveyors Representative for Idaho.

Darrell Hanners, PLS

Darrell is a Professional Land Surveyor licensed in Idaho. Darrell graduated from ISU in May 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geomatics Technology; he began working for Dioptra right after graduation.

Darrell has been involved in an array of services such as ground based LiDAR, construction staking, boundary surveying, QC/QA services, and mapping to name a few. Key projects include the South Maybe Canyon Mine Cross Valley Fill Reclamation and the Ashton Hill Pre-Engineering Survey.

Project Surveyor

Michael L. Deuell, PLS

Michael has 36 years of experience in the Civil Engineering and Land Surveying fields. He joined Dioptra in October 2018 after a lengthy career at another local surveying and engineering firm. He obtained his Idaho professional surveyor’s license in 1995. His experience includes QC/QA services, construction staking, aerial mapping surveys, ALTA surveys, ground water monitoring well surveys, boundary surveys, subdivision platting, industrial as-built surveys for design projects and control surveys.  He spent many years as the contracted on-site surveyor during both the operational phase and shutdown phase for the now defunct FMC chemical plant in Pocatello, ID. Key projects include the Parking Garage for the Bannock Regional Medical Center, Portneuf Medical Center, Portneuf Wellness Complex, Bannock County Jail, FMC and JR Simplot Plant site boundary surveys.
